We’re Back…

…ish. New update to the system. Haven’t gotten to do the backstory or put it on the wiki yet, but the Burglars are finally here.

They can be found here.

Super Build Saturday #5: Quick-Witted and Skilled

With all the combat that goes around in Pirates vs. Ninjas, it can be easy to forget that solutions to problems don’t always need to come to violence. Because of this, some people can frequently forget that there are abilities specifically for skill training. While it’s certainly fun to bash a villain’s head in and crash the gates, sometimes subtlety, diplomacy, and knowledge are more powerful tools than a sword. After all, attacks can wear you out, thinking can not.

For today’s Super Build Saturday, we’re going to discuss building characters that provide valuable functions outside of combat and help the party solve problems as easily as possible. Skills aren’t just for Craftsmen, after all.

Freeform Friday #5: PvN Risus

Alright. Let’s say you’re a huge fan of the abilities and world in Pirates vs. Ninjas, but sometimes, you just wanna roleplay something with your friends that’s really fast and quick. After all, sometimes it’s just a beer, pretzels, and board games kind of night. Sounds like you’re out of luck, right? Nope.

Theory Thursdays #5: Cloak and DaggARR

Despite only having a handful of abilities dedicated to it (pretty much all of them ninja abilities). Stealth and espionage will likely come up in numerous campaigns. With actual stealth being an agility skill and precision (one of the highest on average attributes) being the skill that spots it, one might assume that stealth is best left to one party specialist. However, this only covers the physical act of hiding. There’s plenty that your players can do to get into the mood and suspenseful action.

Super Build Saturday #4: Low Attributes

Okay. So you’ve built your character and you have an awesome idea, but it’s going to require a very high score in some attribute. You don’t have the spare character points lying around to raise it to a 10 without lowering something. So, what ability score do you lower? Well, today, we’re going to help you make that decision. It’s fair to not that no matter what score you lower in Pirates vs. Ninjas, it’s going to open up some valid combat strategies against your character. No matter what, you’re making a trade-off. Still, if you look at it objectively, you can decide what stat is best to lower for your character.

Freeform Friday #4: 10 Completely Random Character Concepts

I’m suffering from writer’s block today. So, I thought I’d just write about something I enjoy; making characters. Not necessarily the character creation process itself, but creating the concepts for characters. Even when I go stereotypical with my characters, I always love to put some twist on it. So, for today, I’m just going to list a few random ideas for characters in Pirates vs. Ninjas that someone could go out and try to make if they wanted. Something just for fun.

Theory Thursday #4: Boss NPCs for GMs

Alright. So, you’ve read through the system, you like what you’ve seen, you have an idea for a campaign, and you know the rules well enough to run it. What’s left? Oh right. Enemies. Well, there’s some monsters pre-made, you can use and modify those. Still, you’ll want a human opponent at some point. That’s shouldn’t be too hard. Right?

Actually. It’s isn’t, but there are some mistakes a GM can make that’ll turn an encounter from a boss into a punching bag. The Kurosawa Corollary does a lot to keep a group of 6 adventurers from steam-rolling a boss, but even a -3 to all rolls can’t cover everything if your team works well together. Here’s some basic GM tips to help you get started and challenging your players.

Well-Loved Hero Wednesday #4: Sokka

So, I decided I wanted to do a character that uses some of the new supplemental stuff to show off how a character with the new life gainer abilities and the new flaws might look. So, I needed someone smart, cowardly, and that acts as a back-up character most of the time. Still, it needed to be someone decently heroic. I thought about it a long while, and I came up with one character perfect for this.

I’m lying, actually. I went with Sokka from Avatar because I just wanted to give him “Return to Me, My Loyal Steel” and make a semi-competent combat character that makes me chuckle on the inside, but all that sounded good, didn’t it?
