Super Build Saturday #2: The Untouchables

With the heavy aspect of teamwork in Pirates vs. Ninjas, a good number of people can forget that with a high reaction stat also comes the ability to consistently interrupt the turns of others. While many strategies work best with simultaneous attacks, there’s something to be said about the power of turn interruption. By interrupting someone’s actions, a player can attack a target and then move out of the way of the attack that was aimed at them. However, there are limits to this action. First, it can only be done once a turn. So, if multiple opponents are targeting, this tactic can tend to fail. Secondly, for most characters, the character will need to be attacked on the turn where they pull this trick off.

Still, with a bit of thinking and planning, this tactic can be especially potent in the right hands. Here’s a few tips to get you started…

Freeform Friday #2: 11 Tips to Survive a Con

Okay. So some of you will notice that I promised that I would post the day after Animefest and didn’t. This is honestly because I needed the time to recover from what was a very awesome and weird con. I got robbed, sang opera, heckled cosplayers as Dick Gumshoe, learned the secrets, and spoiled my nephew rotten all while getting some valuable contacts and information for promoting Pirates vs. Ninjas (but all that’s a story for another time). So after 4 straight days of that, you can imagine I needed some sleep.

Seeing as its been exactly a week since my last post, I’ll just start from where I left off. Of course, this means that I get to talk about the Convention experience with all of you and give you some tips on surviving your first con should you ever try it. So, without further ado, I present Dairun’s 11 Tips to Survive a Con!

News Update: Animefest

Hey guys. Just giving you a fair warning. Starting tomorrow and through labor day, Captain Pegnose and I will be at Animefest in Dallas. So, posts will either be late or non-existent this weekend. I’ll catch up on the posts I missed when I get back. If you’re going to be in the area, just look for Dairun Cates. I’ll be at the free gaming tables a few times during the con trying to promote the game. Until then, later guys.

Theory Thursdays #2: Starting Character Points

The official rules on the wiki suggest 40 character points for a starting character. Of course, like any other tabletop roleplaying game, this is just a suggestion for starting characters. In reality, 40 character points should be thought of as “level 1” for the Pirates vs. Ninjas RPG. A good place to start for long term campaigns, but possibly too low for people seeking more high-powered campaigns. After all, a good number of example heroes can run over 100 points. While the fact that these characters typically work alone speaks for why they’re so high-powered, some PCs might want to play over fight these characters in combat. So, for this week’s Theory Thursday, let’s crack open starting character point totals and see what they mean and what character at certain power levels are typically capable of.

Well-Loved Hero Wednesday #2: Segata Sanshiro

Segata Sanshiro.

What else is there to say other than why the hell not? For this week’s Well-Loved Hero Wednesday, I decided to stat out the most hilarious console advertisement of all time. Throwing everyone and making them blow up. Carrying a Sega Saturn on his back and his fists ready for battle, Sanshiro is not one to mess with. Bow before the only man that could save the Sega Saturn in Japan. He’s a beast of a combatant, and may cream the average team if they chose precision as their lowest overall stat.

Talk Back Tuesdays with Captain Pegnose #2: Epic Tale

Ahoy me hearties, and welcome to another Talk Back Tuesday!

I’m sure all ye landlubbers sent me plenty of questions and queries over the last week, and I be anxious to answer. Although, I don’t know if we’ll be having time to address them all.  I be havin’ an amazing tale to tell about the past week. For, ye see, I almost not be making it this week, but I pulled it through by the skin of me teeth and the grit of me jaw.

Mythology Monday #1: The Secret Historians

There are very few people left alive that remember life before the current Pirate/Ninja war. After all, the 3 legendary heroes went missing around 30 years ago, and in a world filled with T-rexes and Onis, a person is lucky to live past 40. Even less people remember the first Pirate/Ninja war. This is probably on account of the fact that the original war ending somewhere around a 1,000 years ago. Of course, there could always be a few immortals or time travelers running around the world. Stranger things have happened.

This doesn’t mean such history is lost however. While the average human life is short, this is not true of all non-human life. There exist many creatures that can live for hundreds or even thousands of years. The ones that can talk and think for themselves remember quite a few things about the world’s history. That’s why the lore-minded adventurers in the world have given such creatures the nickname “The Secret Historians”.

Supplement Sunday #1: Life Gainers

As many people know, agile rejuvenation is a great way to take an agility-based character and make them last longer in the middle of a harsh battle. Abilities like Lightspeed Metabolism and There is an I in Captain allow a character to keep a fairly steady Life gain going. While the life gain from each isn’t amazingly high, they can add up in the long run. However, it doesn’t do enough. Life gain seems to heavily favor ninjas and practically does not exist for Wanderers. On top of that, the life gain is not enough to help again more damage intensive builds. So, this week, we’re introducing a few new life gaining moves.

Super Build Saturday #1: Low Level Bliss

One of the common misconceptions in Pirates vs. Ninjas is that low level abilities lose their use once a player decides to pay for higher level abilities. Why do 5-10 damage when you can dish out a whopping 50+ damage raging digit?

Well, while high level abilities obviously have their uses (after all, they wouldn’t be high level if they didn’t), there are uses for low level abilities. Today, we’re going to look at some of those.

Freeform Friday #1: In Memory of Satoshi Kon

As many people know, Satoshi Kon died this week at the age of 46 from pancreatic cancer. I loved the man’s works. It’s only natural that I do the first Freeform Friday in his honor, but the truth of the matter is that as much as I love his works, I don’t really know enough about the man to write an article or do him justice. As much as I’d love to spout facts about his life and his works and his influence, I fear that I can really only scratch the surface of what this man really meant to his fans and the people around him.

So, I’ll honestly do my best, and you can read if you want. We can go back to being funny and playful tomorrow. I promise.
